Monaghan - Ireland

County Monaghan is a mainly rural county in Ireland (shown in dark green in the diagram). It is part of the Border Region and is in the province of Ulster. Monaghan County Council is the local authority for the county. According to the 2016 census, the county had a population of 61,386 people. It is the fifth smallest of the Irish Republic’s 26 counties in area (1295km2) and fourth smallest by population, with only 37% of the County’s population living within an urban area. It is bound by Counties Cavan, Meath, Louth, Armagh, Tyrone and Fermanagh. It is strategically located on the Donegal/Derry – Dublin corridor, adjacent to the M1 corridor and has strong links to Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. The County is predominantly rural with a quality drumlin landscape interspersed with wetlands and woodlands..

OVERALL AMBITION

Based on the highly innovative PoliRural approach, project sharing and learning best-practice from other regions, the overall ambition is to explore the potential of non-traditional entrants to enter farming in County Monaghan. The project research will explore the motivation and potential for such new entrants into the farming sector and what supports they need to effectively become a farmer or to work in the farming sector

Expected outputs

The aim is to create a new support service, “I want to be a Farmer”, for nontraditional entrants to farming and looking at what supports they may need to effectively become a farmer or to work in the farming sector. This service will be targeted at:

Irish people without a farming background

New community members who may be interested in pursuing a career in farming

People who have immigrated to Ireland from other countries (many from Eastern European countries), mostly young people and some of whom already have a farming background

Expected impact (qualitative)

There is currently no such support service in Ireland or even policies to do so, so a direct impact will be new non-traditional entrants into the farming sector in County Monaghan, and a best-practice service that can be adopted and affect policies in other regions and EU Member States.

Progress bar

Progress bar can help orient the user in terms of what the pilot was doing, what is happening now and what will happen in the future. While the structure of the bar will be the same for all pilots, its content will differ from pilot to pilot. A dynamic front end with a predetermined colour scheme can be used to differentiate past, present and future, like in the graphic below.

  • Innovating Communities

Innovating Communities (IC) is a new major training programme aimed at enhancing innovation and creativity among Monaghan communities. IC, a LEADER Cooperation project, offers free facilitated training and mentoring in Design Thinking (DT), aka Problem Solving, to tackle local issues and ideas. Led by Monaghan Integrated Development (MID) across our neighbour counties Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal, Cavan and Louth, IC will bring exciting benefits to our local towns and villages. Since IC began, community individuals, groups and businesses have been invited to submit Challenges on the project website at www.innovating.ie/ideas. Using submitted Monaghan Challenges, MID have formed their first batch of free Training Courses and invite community and business individuals and groups, who want to learn the DT process and or have an interest in the particular topic, to register to participate. Courses that are open for registration are; ‘Reimagining Community Spaces as Digital Hubs - Register before Mon 10th May’ which aims to generate innovative ideas for creating and sustaining digital hubs through collaboration between community centres, groups and interested individuals, and ‘Attracting People to Work and Live in County Monaghan - Register before Mon 17th May’ which focuses on generating community action that will attract people to live and work in the county’s rural communities, such as providing high quality jobs, rejuvenating our town centres, and repurposing general infrastructure. ‘Climate Action, Biodiversity and Sustainability’ is another course which is now closed for registrations. Missed this opportunity? Submit a Challenge or round up a group to participate in another Course similar or inspired by this existing Course. The training will employ a ‘person centred design’ approach where groups and individuals are helped to identify topics important to their community or business and the training support will be provided to work with people to help them explore ideas and best possible solutions. The process will provide a high level of support to help community groups and would-be innovators move more confidently and creates a process for the discovery of community needs, idea generation and the testing of solutions. To register your interest for the training and for more information, please visit www.innovating.ie / contact Collette 087 176 1732.
